BKA Development and Education

Development

Friesland - BKA Second Four Year Link
We are now in the second four year link with the Friesland Korfball Association. They have been very supportive in the many areas listed below. Special thanks must go to Jacob Woudstra for his mammoth effort in cajoling the Dutch trainers in participating in the club school link for the past nine years. He also organised the Friesland UK tour that is always a hit with the universities as is the September training weeks for students in Friesland.

The main areas of assistance this year have been:

1) Director of Coaching
2) Club/School Link
3) Internationals
4) Avon Tyrrell Summer Camp
5) Development and Promotion Tours
6) Other exchanges between clubs and players
7) Student Club Development

Administration
The main task is to maintain the contact with all development co-ordinators and ensure they are kept up to date. Dealings with enquiries from the public has dropped to about 1 per week from 3 per week last year. Time has been spent preparing job descriptions and encouraging people to take on bits of work for the BKA.

Club/School Link
This years Club/School Link was well supported by the clubs. The areas that took part were Cambridge, Kent and London. Unfortunately, Norwich, Nottingham and Sheffield had to pull out early on. The Kent programme was also blighted with the disaster when Teresa Middleton became involved in a car crash whilst on holiday. She is still recovering and is likely to do so for several months. Our thoughts are with her.

Korfball is becoming well established in these areas with councils planning for Korball well in advance. Some schools are hiring equipment and some purchasing. This means that we have more children than ever taught Korfball and keen to join clubs. All we need now is to get the clubs in a state where they can develop the careers for these youngsters.

Avon Tyrrell Summer Camp
Around 40 young people took part with good representation across the clubs.

National Youth Day
Forty-eight teams took part in age groups at U10, U12, U14, U18. The number U10 entries reached record levels and extra equipment and pitches had to be prepared. Those that attended noticed an improvement in the level of play even at the U12 age group.

Congratulations must go to the Nikkie Kidd and her team of workers who co-ordinated the whole event.

Grants
Grants were and will continue to be provided in the following areas:
1) Subsidy for Coaching Courses
2) BKA Affiliation discount for new clubs
3) Taster Sessions
4) BSKA Development

Challenge 2003
A new 2 year development plan has been agreed between the BKA and IKF.

London Youth Games
A major sporting event in the capital. It is hoped that the LDKA will try to get Korfball as one of the participation sports. A proposal was sent to the games organisers outlining what the BKA and LDKA could do.

Sports Halls and Club Houses
A facilities strategy is being prepared for the UK to encourage councils, schools, etc to consider building halls suitable for Korfball. This document should be available after consultation with the area associations before November 1998.

Phoenix College Sports Hall
The bid for lottery funds is virtually complete. The outstanding issues are:
1) Setting up of a company limited by guarantee organised by BKA
2) Signing of lease agreement by Phoenix College solicitors
3) Completion of structural report by Peter Gittins Associates
4) Preparation of business plan by Merton Leisure Ltd

Development Conference
A development conference is planned for Jan/Feb 1999.

National County Championships
This event took place in Edinburgh in 1997. The event will now be run by the Competitions Sub-committee. This year (1998)0 the event will be in Cambridge, already 22 teams have entered. Surprise non-entries from all London areas.

Equipment Grant
Data has been collected from around the country outlining the equipment requirement. A proposal to the lottery fund will be prepared and submitted in 1998.

Student Database
Hand written data has been collected by the BSKA. The task is to get the data on to the BKA database.

U23 Club Championship
This event was not possible to get off the ground last year. The Competitions Sub-committee will attempt to run this event next year.

Club Starter Pack
Lack of administrative support has meant that no progress was made.

Conferences and Exhibitions
The sports council exhibition was cancelled this year and no other conference was attended.

Education

Coaching Sub-Committee
Karen Wildin is stepping down after almost 10 years of working for the BKA as Coaching Co-ordinator. My sincerest thanks and best wishes go to her as she gets to grip with her next 10+ year project of bringing up 3 fine children.

Karen has worked very hard on providing structure to the coaching education and has blended the sports council and coaching foundation structure into three BKA course levels. She has worked tirelessly in planning and delivering these courses and has managed to convince and prove, even the most apathetic of korfballers, that their is something for them.

Level 3
Jan Piepers has been working with Karen Wildin to deliver the level 3 coaching course which ended in July 1997. Nine of the 15 people graduated from the course. The documentation for this course needs to be published and will be one of the first actions for the new Coaching co-ordinator.

Level 2
21 out of 22 people graduated from the level 2 residential coaching course in 1997. This years course was completely full two months earlier than last year.

6 out of 7 people graduated from the non-residential coaching course.

Level 1
No report available.

Leaders Award Courses
No report available.

Referees Sub-Committee
Richard Blanchfield has pioneered the work in referee courses and setting up a database. The task ahead is to get the names and abilities up to date. It is hoped Dave Bond will join this committee to help Richard and take on the role of National League referee appointments.
