Hi All,

Know this is a bit of a long shot but may as well ask...Does anyone know of any unused or spare posts and balls that we (Southampton Spartans KC) would be able to have/borrow/rent?

We are about to go into both Southampton Uni and Solent Uni, so are looking at having to have 2 or 3 different training venues. The only problem being our lack of posts and balls.

Please let us know if you can help, even if they are the old style balls or wicker posts!

Thanks,

David

There have been previously delevopment grants availabile for new clubs to purchase such equipment. I don't know whether they still are, I tried to find the email address on the website but failed. Perhaps try this page

http://www.englandkorfball.co.uk/contact.aspx

to enquire whether such grants are still available.

Thanks Chris, we have already actually claimed the start up grant that the EKA offer, unfortunately the EKA don't allow for the grant money to be claimed to purchase equipment.

On a side note, I do feel this is a major barrier to starting new clubs. If it wasn't for us being fortunate enough to have equipment donated and borrowed then we wouldn't have any at all.

It might be worth inquiring to the BSKA as well Dave. There is funding specifically given to new student clubs starting and you might be applicable!

If you don't have all the equipment you need yet, I'll talk to my club (Croydon KC) who may be able to help with some balls. We can probably help with old style wicker baskets too, but not posts or bases.

I am surprised that new club grants cannot be used to purchasing much needed equipment.

The rise of University Korfball in recent years has had a lot to do with the financial support of Student unions to enable clubs to buy the equipment they need to start up.

We are looking to replace our balls for the new ones over the coming months so we will get in touch as our old ones become available. As a club we have about 12 and 8 of them were bought in the last 2 and a half years.

I have heard on the grapevine that university funding for sports clubs is on the decline. I know of two university clubs who have actually been asked to vastly reduce or cease playing because Korfball doesn't provide many BUSA points.

We have recently been working our way into the two Leicester Universities and although it looks like we will finally get one of them on board next year, both have said there is no funding until the club reaches it's required number of students; which for a uni trying to start without a nearby senior club with spare kit, presents a chicken and egg problem.

Could the BKA/EKA buy up old equipment from clubs at a reduced rate to then be able to provide club start up kits as well as the funding?

Thanks guys!

Elliot - What's BSKA's email address?

Unfortunately Universities do get judged, in regards to sport, on where they sit in the BUCS tables and also in number of participants. So if you can't provide them with either then the funding will stop.

We are lucky that Sport Solent look after sport for the Council as well, so it's all a bit different there. The other one also only offers funding after 2 years of being able to exist funding yourself, which is strange, as it is when you are starting up that you need the money, although I can see that for a University, they may want to avoid funding something that dies out within a few months.
