Intrigued to see the posting, on the Oxfordshire site, saying that Manchester have applied to join the National League next season. Just thought it might be interesting to know whether other clubs hope to join this year, or are planning to apply over the next few years. Any thoughts?Might it influence the debate on National League structures? Jon. ___________________________________________ Jon H Castle & Keele http://www.castlekorfball.btinternet.co.uk/

Would be great to see Manchester join the National league. Would that mean that whoever came bottom of the Senior division would be relegated? Also, why the hell is it called the Senior division? As the top division is the Premier league, how about a rename to 1st or 2nd division.

As I understand it, as many teams can apply to NL as wish to, but there are play off games to see who gets in. And the bottom team in the senior division plays off to keep their place. I guess its the same kind of story as 2nd teams playing at a higher level in the reserve divison than the bottom half of the premier division - top teams in the CEKL such as manchester may well be playing at a higher level than bottom teams in the senior division...

The Senior Division was renamed NL Division One for the season 2000-2001. It remained so for seasons 01-02 and 02-03. Then it reverted to the Senior Division for season 03-04.I can find no formal announcement of this. The word Senior appears in the 2003 AGM minutes and in the NL rules for 2003-2004. Division One was being used on tables until the end of 2002-2003. I guess the change was made over the summer. Personally I think that Senior division is a rubbish name. Does Senior mean senior in terms of age? If so surely CEKL Division 2 East is also a senior division. Gav, any chance of a poll to see what people think it should be called? Edited by - Jam on 23/01/2004 12:24:10 PM |

Do Manchester only get to apply if they win the CEKL? Or is that irrelevant? (I expect Kevin has the answer to this one - I promise not to disagree with him.)My understanding is that the bottom team in the Senior (or, if you prefer, 1st) division would play off with Manchester. When and where this would happen I don't know... BKA Cup finals day? I'd love to see Manchester in the National League, although I'd obviously rather it wasn't at Oxford's expense. But if you finish bottom and then lose the playoff I suppose you have to accept that you're not good enough. Best win a few games then, I suppose. Dom

Can somebody present an argument in favour of calling it the Senior Division before I start a poll? I certainly can't think of one, but presumably there is a reason of some sort for it.I thought that winning the regional league was not necessary. The top non-national league club in each regional league gets top priority, but I guess other teams can still apply? Woking are top of the LDKA Premier at the moment and are not applying to go into the National League. This is because the majority of the first team don't want to play National League. We've actually lost a few players who were interested in playing NL, which is a bit of a bummer. I'd be shocked if Pelham applied, don't know about West London, probably to soon for them. ------- Korfball.com Webmaster http://www.wokingkorfball.co.uk/ http://www.basingstokekorfball.co.uk/ http://www.londonkorfball.co.uk/

Any club in a feeder league may apply to join the National League. There are certain other criteria: must have at least two teams in league competition and have taken an active part in youth korfball in their area. The bottom placed club in the Senior needs to reapply to the BKA. The BKA then decides on the format for the following year. They may choose to allow an increase in the number of clubs in the NL or they may require applicant clubs to have some form of playoff. Interestingly, the NL rules flit between using Senior Division and Division One almost at will. South West Korfball news - http://www.swka.org Bristol City KC http://www.bristolkorfball.org |

On Jon's original question, the SWKA are looking at the situation of our league and future promotion to the NL. The association intends to produce a policy document in the near future.South West Korfball news - http://www.swka.org Bristol City KC http://www.bristolkorfball.org |

Have to agree with Jam, "Senior" Division is dreadful. If I'm ever explaining to outsiders, I just refer to playing in the league beneath the Premier Division. Otherwise, I look like I'm playing in the "bus pass" division. Then again, "Division One" does imply the start of a numerical sequence, which looks pretty silly when you finish the sequence at ...um... one. So there's a case for another title, if anyone can think of something vaguely credible. It's the challenge the (almost) breakaway Nationwide League teams have faced in the past, and they've failed to resolve it satisfactorily. Premiership B, anyone? Jon. P.S. Any thoughts on the NL question from W. London, Scotland, Norwich, Cambridge, Bearsted...? ___________________________________________ Jon H Castle & Keele http://www.castlekorfball.btinternet.co.uk/ |

How about the top division is called Division 1 and the next division down is called Division 2? Or is that too controversial? Cardiff City http://www.cardiffcitykorfball.co.uk |
